"IMPORTANT INFORMATION
CARRIAGE OF COAL/CHARCOAL/CARBON PRODUCTS
We wish to advise customers that unless the relevant documentation as specified under IMDG code Special Provision 925 is presented to Stena Line, any vehicle carrying these products will need to be treated as hazardous under the IMDG code.
A Self-heating test certificate or an MSDS data sheet which clearly sets out that it is not classed as hazardous under the IMDG code must be provided to our CST team for processing prior to the vehicle’s arrival at the port. Even when a unit carrying Coal/Charcoal/Carbon products is not subject to the IMDG code Special Provision 925 vehicles carrying these products must be declared and booked as “special cargo” to ship on Stena Line services.
This process is necessary to ensure we are aware that this special cargo is booked to ensure safe and proper stowage onboard vessels.
While these loads will be marked as Hazardous, customers are not subject to any hazardous surcharges for these loads.
Prior to loading vehicles will be checked by the ships loading officer for the following:
- Trailers have suitable lashing securing points for shipping
- Trailers have no obvious defects and there is no evidence of fumes or smoke
- The temperature of the cargo will be checked with a handheld thermal gun to ensure it is no more than 5°C above the ambient temperature.
Due to stowage and segregation procedures, cut off times for these loads will be applied as per our current hazardous loads cut off times for each route.
Please read our Freight Transport Information Manual to understand the requirements and procedures on our vessels, at our ports and terminals so we may transport for your goods in a safe and efficient manner.

What changes for you;
